She's Buying a Gun

C is fed up with the violence. Not knowing if she’ll be safe at or away from home. A co-worker told of a friend who was talking on the phone when suddenly she heard a loud noise. Leaving from her bed, phone in hand, she came upon a man who had kicked her door in.

She yelled for him to get out of her house. Instead, he shot her in the arm, grabbing a bag he supposed was her pocketbook. Just a moment later he returned, finding that the bag only held her bible. Somehow she got away.

After hearing the story, and hearing about the Suntrust bank robbery off Capital Blvd. in Northeast Raleigh, AND that a woman was found murdered in the apartment where she once lived, C made up her mind. She’s buying a gun.

She will get the appropriate training. She works odd hours, occasionally arriving home after midnight. Never before has she felt the need to worry. Her garage door opener offers a decent amount of safety.

But as a single woman living alone, she no longer feels safe.

When C wants my advice, she asks. This time she didn’t. Because it’s hard to refute the reasonableness of it. A 5 year old little girl in Baltimore, Maryland is fighting for her life after being hit by a stray bullet. A gun shot by a 17 year old. According to the Baltimore Sun, this teenager was known to hang with a troublesome group. Not a gang. He's been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

As we've said before: bullets don't have names on them.

Hey Venita,

It's not the end of the world that your friend wants to buy a firearm. Frankly, we'd have a lot less problems if women, (legal and sane) carried guns. I would have recommended she get a dog first, however, if she wants a 9mm and calls it "Spot", I'm good with that. She might want to go to some ranges and rent before she decides what to buy. Not everyone really shops around the first time and they wind up buying another, once they realize what they really needed after the first one. Also, it's my personal opinion that women learn to shoot better than men because they don't have the impediment that men have in that they think they already know everything about firearms.

Regards,

David
